How EPUB word counts work
An EPUB contains text files in a reading order called the spine. This counter follows its main reading-order sections, including front matter and notes when present. One section is not always one chapter. It excludes non-linear supplementary files, markup, scripts and styles. Images and scanned pages contribute no words.
Why does my count differ from Calibre or another counter?
Tools differ in which sections they include and how they split words. Here, letter and number sequences count as words; internal apostrophes and hyphens remain part of a word. Chinese, Japanese and Korean script characters appear separately rather than being mislabeled as words. Hidden HTML text can still count; CSS layout is not evaluated.
